DOMINICAN WOMEN WIN 2010-11 CACC RESTAINO CUP AND MEN FINISH SECOND

New Haven, CT. (6/1/11) The Wilmington University men’s athletic program and the Dominican College women have won the 2010-11 Alfred R. Restaino, Sr., Cups, according to an announcement made by Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Commissioner, Dan Mara. The Wildcats won the men’s race with 10.7 points, while the Chargers narrowly surpassed Philadelphia University on the women’s side with 11.0 points.

New Haven, CT. (6/1/11) The Wilmington University men’s athletic program and the Dominican College women have won the 2010-11 Alfred R. Restaino, Sr., Cups, according to an announcement made by Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Commissioner, Dan Mara. The Wildcats won the men’s race with 10.7 points, while the Chargers narrowly surpassed Philadelphia University on the women’s side with 11.0 points.

The men’s and women’s cups are awarded each year to the institutions that perform the best across the board in CACC regular-season and post-season play. The point system used for the award takes into account each team’s finish in both the CACC regular-season and conference tournament. Each school receives a combined point total, which is divided by the number of sports the institution sponsors.

"I couldn't be more proud of our women's and men's programs," said Director of Athletics Joe Clinton. "It is a great accomplishment for our student-athletes and coaches who work hard all year to be recognized with the women winning their first ever Restaino Cup and the men finishing in second place."

After sitting in fifth place after the winter season, Wilmington won baseball and golf conference championships in the spring to jump into the top spot. The Wildcats also qualified for the CACC soccer tournament in the fall, while the cross country team finished in third place at the conference championship. Wilmington was the only institution to win multiple men’s championships this year.

Dominican took second in the men’s standings (10.5), and was followed by Philadelphia (9.4), Bloomfield College (9.3) and Post University (8.9). The Chargers won the CACC Tournament title in soccer and played in the basketball and baseball tournaments. The baseball team won the regular-season championship and advanced to the tournament title game. Philadelphia was runner-up in cross country and tennis and qualified for the basketball and soccer tournaments. The Deacons won the basketball regular-season and tournament crowns and were the soccer regular-season champion. The Eagles placed second in golf and played in the soccer, basketball and baseball conference tournaments.

Dominican was tied for third place in the women’s standings after the winter season, but vaulted into first by winning the softball tournament championship this spring, along with an appearance in the lacrosse tournament. Earlier this year, the DC cross country team finished second at the conference championship and the Charger soccer, volleyball and basketball teams each qualified for CACC Tournament action.

Philadelphia was second in the women’s standings with 10.9 points. The Lady Rams won a conference title in cross country, finished second in the lacrosse regular-season and conference tournament, advanced to the volleyball semi-finals and claimed a spot in the soccer and basketball tournaments.

Holy Family was third with 10.8 points. The Tigers won a regular-season crown in basketball and volleyball and advanced to the tournament championship in basketball, volleyball and soccer. They also earned a berth to the tennis tournament.

Georgian Court moved up the standings after a solid spring, which included a lacrosse title and a softball regular-season co-championship. The Lions finished in fourth place with 10.4 points, while Wilmington was fifth with 10.2 points. The Wildcats placed third in cross country and won the regular-season championship in soccer, while also qualifying for the volleyball and softball tournaments.
