New Haven, Conn. (5/26/17) The Wilmington University Department of Athletics on Thursday was named the winner of the 2016-17 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Alfred R. Restaino, Sr. Cup for men's sports, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara.
The Chargers of Dominican College finished in fifth place overall.
The cup is awarded annually to the institution that performs at the highest level in all CACC-sponsored men's sports. The point system used for the award takes into account each athletic program's finish in both the 2016-17 CACC regular season contests and conference tournaments. Each institution receives a combined point total and the sum is then divided by the number of sports the institution sponsors.
WilmU turned in a first-place score of 12.5500, as the Wildcats claimed the Restaino Men's Cup for the eighth-straight year. Team championships in both men's cross country and men's golf led the way for the Wildcats to capture the Cup. The men's cross country team won its second-consecutive conference crown in the fall of 2016, while the men's golf team rallied from six strokes back in the final round of this spring's championship to claim the program's seventh-straight CACC title. WilmU men's cross country is led by head coach Keith Jones, while Harry Jennings leads at the helm of the men's golf program.
In addition to those two titles, several other Wildcat men's teams enjoyed fine seasons throughout 2016-17, including men's soccer and baseball reaching the CACC semifinals in their respective tournaments and men's basketball advancing to the quarterfinals of the CACC tournament.
Georgian Court placed second in the final Restaino Cup standings with an average mark of 10.8125, as the Lions celebrated CACC titles in men's soccer and men's outdoor track & field this season.
Bloomfield College rounded out the top three in the standings with a third-place score of 10.4167. Gerald Holmes' men's basketball team captured the CACC Championship, while both men's cross country and track & field turned in solid runner-up finishes in their respective championship events.
