BASEBALL EARNS VICTORIES OVER FELICIAN COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (4/17/12) The Dominican College baseball team earned two victories over the visiting Golden Falcons of Felician College this evening in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header played at Veteran's Memorial Park. Dominican took game one, 7-6 and won the nightcap, 4-3 to improve to 17-20 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
Orangeburg, NY (4/17/12) The Dominican College baseball team earned two victories over the visiting Golden Falcons of Felician College this evening in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header played at Veteran's Memorial Park. Dominican took game one, 7-6 and won the nightcap, 4-3 to improve to 17-20 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
Game One: DC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as second basemen Austin Holzknecht (Coral Springs, FL) hit an RBI sacrifice fly ball to center field.
Felician put three runs on the board in the third to go up 3-1, but the Chargers answered back with four runs in the bottom stanza. Senior right fielder Christopher Gonzalez (Bronx, NY) delivered a one out two-run single to left field and Holzknecht followed with an RBI single up-the-middle to give DC the lead back at 4-3. Catcher Tyler Clark (Cheshire, CT) followed with an RBI triple for the 5-3 lead.
In the fifth, Xavier Bonilla (Bronx, NY) had an RBI single to right field and would later score on a wild pitch to give the Chargers the 7-3 advantage. The Golden Falcons made the game interesting with two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth for the final 7-6 Charger victory.
Holzknecht and Gonzalez each finished with two RBIs in the game.
Starter Caleb Whiteley (San Antonio, TX) improved to 3-0 on the season with a six inning performance, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and six strikeouts.
Matthew Festa (Staten Island, NY) got his first collegiate save as he pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Game Two: Dominican tied the game in the bottom of the first inning on the infield RBI single off the bat of Andrew Camardella (Pelham, NY) for a 1-1 score.
The Chargers pulled ahead 2-1 on a sacrifice fly ball to left field by Gonzalez to plate Bonilla.
FC scored a run in both the seventh and eighth inning to go ahead 3-2, but the Chargers came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Gonzalez hit a ground ball to the short stop who threw the ball to second for the force play. Pinch runner Kyle Hall (Nassau, Bahamas) came in to score on the play, but as FC tried to complete the double play, a throwing error allowed Tony Blake (Windsor, CT) to come home and lift Dominican to the 4-3 victory.
Reliever Nicholas Kevlin (Conway, NH) picked up the win (1-2) in two innings of relief, alowing one run on one hit and four strikeouts.
Starter Anthony Pastrana (Queens, NY) went seven innings in the no decision, allowing two runs on seven hits and five strikeouts.
Dominican is back in action tomorrow as they travel to non-conference opponent, University of New Haven.
