GRIFFINS COME FROM BEHIND TO SECURE THE SWEEP OVER CHARGERS

Philadelphia, Pa. (4/14/18) The Chargers fell in two games of a doubleheader against conference opponent Chestnut Hill College. The Griffins secured a game one victory over the Chargers by a score of 9-6 and earned a game two victory by a score of 12-11 in 10 innings. With both losses, the Chargers now hold a record of 10-22 (8-7 CACC) on the season. The Griffins improved to 14-14 (10-8 CACC).
Game One: Nathaniel Popiel (Mechanicville, NY) took the mound in game one for the Chargers and Patrick Kelley countered for the Griffins. Both teams got off to a fast start by scoring one run each in the first inning. Justin Decker (Rotterdam, NY) ripped an RBI double to get the scoring started for the Chargers. The Griffins answered when Eric Gilham recorded an RBI single to tie the game.
The Chargers regained the lead in the fourth inning when Brett Karcher-Bowen (Cypress, TX) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The Griffins tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly by Jared Healey. The Chargers took a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning on two RBI singles by Elijah Tavarez (Valley Stream, NY) and Anthony Bartolomei (Oakhurst, NJ).
The Griffins cut the Charger lead to 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and added two more runs in the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead. The Griffins scored four more times in the eighth inning for a 9-4 lead. The Chargers made the score 9-6 when Joshua Colon (Bronx, NY) hit an RBI double and Karcher-Bowen singled in his second RBI of the game.
Billy Bethel, who came on in relief for Kelley, pitched four innings and closed out the 9-6 win in game one. Bethel earned the win for his fourth of the season.
Game Two: Christopher Catoire (Brooklyn, NY) started for the Chargers and Pat Woltemate started for the Griffins. The Chargers jumped on Woltemate early with four runs in the top of the first inning. Decker, Bartolomei, Brian Rotella (Stony Point, NY), and Max Chidsey (Naples, FL) all pitched in to help the Chargers take the early 4-0 lead.
Bartolomei and Rotella contributed in the second inning to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead over the Griffins. The Griffins got on the board in the second inning when Jared Healey singled for two RBI's. Joe Rotelli (Morganville, NJ) kncocked in two more runs for the Chargers in the third inning with a two RBI double.
The Griffins scratched two runs across in the third inning and added two more in the fourth inning with two RBI doubles by Demetrius Isaac and Eric Gilham. The Griffins cut the deficit to 9-7 when Gilham singled in his second RBI of the game.
The Chargers made the score 10-7 in the ninth inning when Tyler Malia (Delran, NJ) hit an RBI single. The Griffins came fighting back in the bottom of the ninth by scoring three runs to tie the game at 10-10 to send the game into extra innings.
Shota Barbaeu (Atlanta, GA) drove in the go ahead run for the Chargers in the tenth inning on an RBI single to give Dominican an 11-10 lead. The Griffins rallied one more time in the bottom of the tenth inning and Matthew Owens hit the game winning two RBI double to help give the Griffins the win 12-11.
The Chargers will look to bounce back when they travel to Wilmington University for a conference doubleheader on Sunday April 15th at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
