Hockessin, Del. (4/21/18) The Chargers baseball team split a doubleheader with the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning. The Chargers fell in game one by a score of 8-1 and bounced back to take game two by a score of 9-7. The Chargers now have a record of 13-25 (11-10 CACC). The Lightning now have a record of 15-25-1 (13-13 CACC).
Game One: Brian Rotella (Stony Point, NY) homered in the top of the second inning to give the Chargers an early 1-0 lead. The Lightning tied the score when Raul Perez-Duran hit an RBI single. The Lightning scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Lightning added two more runs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 8-1 and secured the game one victory.
Jay Smith finished the game with three hits and three RBI's while Raul Perez-Duran recorded four hits and two RBI's in the win. Brandon Abdul earned the win for the Lightning to improve his record to 2-4 on the season. Abdul pitched eight innings and struck out 14 batters in the win.
Game Two: The Lightning started the scoring off in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead when Edwin Lee hit an RBI triple. Brian Rotella recorded a two RBI double in the top of the fourth inning to give the Chargers the lead. Dominican added one more run in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 3-1.
Jay Smith cut the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI single and Zach Roseman followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. Dominican regained the lead in the fifth inning when Elijah Tavarez (Valley Stream, NY) and Shota Barbeau (Atlanta, GA) recorded an RBI each to make the score 5-3. The Lightning answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game.
In the sixth inning, Brett Karcher-Bowen (Cypress, TX) recorded an RBI single to give the Chargers the lead back. Joseph Libio (Tamarac, FL) hit an RBI double to extend the Dominican lead to 7-5. Justin Decker (Rotterdam, NY) extended the Dominican lead to 8-5 with an RBI double in the seventh inning. Barbeau recorded his second RBI of the game in the eighth inning to give the Chargers a 9-5 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Zach Roseman homered to cut the Dominican lead to 9-6. The Lightning added one more run in the ninth inning when Raul Perez-Duran hit an RBI double to cut the deficit to 9-7. Jaden Diaz-Lmbert (Erial, NJ) came in relief for the Chargers and earned the save by securing the 9-7 win.
Nicholas Galese (Totowa, NJ) earned the win and improved his record to 3-1 on the season. Galese finished with six innings pitched and recorded three strike outs.
The Chargers will be back in action on Sunday April 22nd when they host Jefferson University. The game will be played at Veteran's Memorial Park in Orangeburg, N.Y. at 12:00 PM.
