CHARGERS RALLY TO TAKE GAME ONE BUT FALL IN GAME TWO IN SPLIT WITH BLOOMFIELD
Newark, N.J. (4/24/18) The Chargers baseball team traveled to Bloomfield College on Tuesday for a conference doubleheader with the Bears.
Newark, N.J. (4/24/18) The Chargers baseball team traveled to Bloomfield College on Tuesday for a conference doubleheader with the Bears. The Chargers took game one by a score of 3-2 in 10 innings and fell in game two by a score of 8-4. The Chargers now stand 14-27 (12-12 CACC) on the season and are currently in fourth place in the north division of the CACC standings. The Bears now stand at 12-21-1 (7-15 CACC) on the season.
Game One: Arben Becaj (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took the mound in game one for the Chargers and struck out eight batters over five innings pitched. The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Bears took a 1-0 lead. Jhoan Rodriguez homered in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend Bloomfield's lead to 2-0.
The Chargers were trailing 2-0 by the ninth inning and rallied to tie the game. Joshua Colon (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded an RBI to cut the Bear's lead in half. Colon scored later in the inning off of a wild pitch to tie the game. The Bears were held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth which sent the game into extra innings.
Justin Decker (Rotterdam, N.Y.) got the rally started in the tenth inning with a single and Brian Rotella (Stony Point, N.Y.) followed with a walk. Max Chidsey (Naples, Fla.) gave the Chargers the 3-2 lead with an RBI double. John-Michael Broderick (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) shut the Bears down in the bottom of the tenth inning to secure the win. Broderick improved his record to 4-4 on the season.
Kyle Morgan (Boca Raton, Fla.), Christopher Catoire (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Jordan Bernacet (Schenectady, N.Y.) also entered the game in relief and helped keep the Chargers in the game.
Game Two: The Chargers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Joe Rotelli (Morganville, N.J.) recorded an RBI single. The Bears answered in the bottom half of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead with two RBI singles by Harry Montero and Azmir Garcia.
The Bears extended their lead to 4-1 with runs in the third inning and in the fourth inning. Joseph Libio (Tamarac, Fla.) cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly.
The Chargers cut the deficit to 4-3 with a run in the top of the fifth inning. The score remained until the bottom of the sixth.
The Bears rallied in the sixth inning and loaded the bases for Jhoan Rodriguez. Rodriguez extended the Bear's lead with a grand slam to make the score 8-3.
Tyler Malia (Delran, N.J.) made the score 8-4 with an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning but the Bears closed out the 8-4 win in game two. Carlos Rodriguez earned the win for the Bears to improve his record to 1-0. Rodriguez struck out three batters over six innings to secure the win.
The Chargers will be back in action on Wednesday April 25th when they host the Cougars of Caldwell University. The doubleheader will be played at Palisades Credit Union Park with game one scheduled for 3:00 PM and game two is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
