Waterbury, Conn. (5/10/18) The Dominican College baseball team traveled to Waterbury, Connecticut on Thursday for day one of the double-elimination portion of the 2018 CACC Baseball Championships. The Chargers entered the tournament in hopes of defending their conference title from 2017. The Chargers dropped both games of day one and are now eliminated from the tournament.
The Chargers finished the 2018 campaign with a record of 20-32 overall. The Chargers finished the year as the second seed in the north division and defeated the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in the play-in game last Saturday.
The Chargers fell in game one to the Felician University Golden Falcons by a score of 12-0 and fell in game two to the Post University Eagles by a score of 8-3.
Game One: The Golden Falcons got off to a fast start in the first two innings with four runs in the first inning and five runs in the second inning for an early 9-0 lead. Felician added one run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 12-0 lead and ultimately secured the 12-0 win in game one.
The Golden Falcons recorded ten hits in the win. Michael Gutierrez earned the win for Felician and improved to 4-4 on the season.
Justin Decker (Rotterdam, NY), Anthony Bartolomei (Oakhurst, NJ), Max Chidsey (Naples, Fla.), and Brett Karcher-Bowen (Cypress, TX) each recorded one hit for the Chargers in the loss.
Game Two: The Chargers met the Eagles of Post University in game two. Both teams dropped game one and were looking to move on to day two of the conference tournament. Dominican took the lead in the first inning over the Eagles when Bartolomei singled in Justin Decker for the 1-0 lead.
Bartolomei singled in the Dominican second run for a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Eagles got on the board in the third inning and took the lead in the fourth inning. Dominican cut the deficit to 7-3 in the seventh inning and Post added a run in the eighth inning.
The Eagles secured the 8-3 win in game two and will move on to day two of the tournament. The Chargers fell in game two and were officially eliminated from tournament play.
