Orangeburg, N.Y. (11/17/17) The Chargers opened their home portion of the 2017-2018 schedule on Friday against the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose. The game marked the start of the 6th Annual Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament at the Hennessey Center. The Chargers have not played since last weekend where they took both games at the Stonehill Tip-off Tournament to start their season off 2-0. The Chargers were looking for a 3-0 start in front of their home fans for the first time this season.
Early on in the first half, the Chargers did not record their first basket until two minutes in when Sayon Charles (Staten Island, N.Y.) made a layup to put his team on the board. The Golden Knights made the next two baskets for a 6-2 lead and that was their largest lead for the rest of the game as the Chargers then went on a 9-0 run to take the early lead and never looked back from there. The Chargers dominated the rest of the first half jumping out to a double-digit lead after a 10-0 run.
The Chargers held a 33-18 lead entering halftime and things were looking up for them on both sides of the ball. The Golden Knights' Julian Lipinski led all scorers at the end of the first half with nine points as well as grabbing five rebounds. Daniel Grant (Middletown, N.Y.) led the way for the Chargers at the break with eight points, while Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn.) both recorded six points. Dominican was able to make their way to the free throw line a good amount in the first half and went 8-10 from the stripe. The Chargers would continue drawing fouls in the second half but making their free throws became a problem down the stretch.
Dominican jumped out to a 22-point lead to start the second half which was their largest lead of the game. The Chargers kept their distance for most of the second half and it looked like they were going to cruise to a victory. The Golden Knights were able to take advantage of some missed opportunities by the Chargers and eventually cut the deficit down to just seven points. It seemed like the game was starting to slip away once the Golden Knights cut the Charger lead to single digits with just over two minutes to play.
The Chargers responded to extend their lead back to double digits and improved to record to 3-0 (0-0 CACC) and earned their first home win of the season by a score of 71-59. The Chargers were led by Grant who recorded 19 total points while Charles and Rodwell both added 11 points. Charles added 10 rebounds in the win to go along with his 11 points for a double-double performance. The Chargers missed nine free throws in the second but were able to keep their lead.
In game one of the tournament, the Molloy College Lions edged the Caldwell University Cougars by a score of 63-61. Saturday marks day two of the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament as the Caldwell University Cougars will match up against the College of Saint Rose at 6:00 PM and the Chargers will play host to the Molloy College Lions at 8:00 PM.
