DOMINICAN DROPS FIRST GAME OF MOCS CHRISTMAS CLASSIC TO ECKERD

Lakeland, Fla. (12/18/17) The Chargers traveled down south to Lakeland, Florida for the Mocs Christmas Classic. First up for the Chargers in the two day tournament were the Tritons of Eckerd College. The Tritons were entering the game on a six game winning streak and were looking to extend that streak to seven against the Chargers. Dominican was coming off of a loss in their last game after falling to Southern Connecticut State University at home and were in search of getting back into the win column. The game between the Chargers and the Tritons was the first for each team in the two day holiday tournament.
The Chargers had a tough first half as the Tritons jumped out to an early double digit lead just five minutes into the game. The Tritons did not look back as they gradually extended their lead as the first half went on. The Tritons reached their largest lead of the half which was 19 with 13 seconds left and took a 39-22 lead into halftime.
Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, N.Y.) led all scorers at halftime with 14 points for the Chargers and went 4 for 4 from the free throw line. The Tritons' Trevon Young led his team in scoring with nine points as well as recording seven rebounds and added three assists in the half. Three point shooting for the Chargers was their weakest point in the first half going 0 for 6 from beyond the arc and Eckerd shot 4 of 9 from three point range shooting 44.4%.
The Tritons got off to a fast start once again to begin the second half by scoring the half's first 9 nine points. The Tritons continued their strong play against the Chargers for the rest of the game. Eventually, the Tritons extended out to their largest lead of the game which was 37 over the Chargers. Dominican never led in this game and were heavily overmatched for the duration of this game.The Chargers eventually fell to the Tritons by a final score of 84-57.
Two more Charger players finished in double figures for the game joining Rodwell who led the team with 14 points. Daniel Grant (Middletown, N.Y.) scored 11 points for the Chargers and pulled down four rebounds. Michael Richardson (Hackensack, N.J.) added 10 points off the bench for the Chargers in the loss.
The Chargers have now dropped back to back games for the first time this season. Now 7-3 (3-1 CACC), the Chargers will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they meet Florida Southern College at 7:00 PM when the Mocs Christmas Classic continues.
