Orangeburg, N.Y. (1/10/18) The Chargers entered Wednesday's game winners of their last two games including their last win against Caldwell. Dominican hosted Holy Family University for their second game since the new year. The Tigers have had a tough season up until this point only earning two victories and have dropped their last three games. Dominican was looking to build off of their win over the Cougars and keep pace with first place Bloomfield.
The Chargers got off to a quick start in the first half by taking the lead early using a 13-2 run to take control of the game. The stretch gave the Chargers a 15-point lead with just over two minutes remaining in the half. A low scoring first half ended with the Tigers bouncing back from a slow start to cut the Charger lead down to single digits before the break. The Tigers only shot 26.7% from the field in the half and went almost seven minutes without making a basket.
The Chargers offense was not much better by shooting 25.8% from the field. The major difference was the free throws. The Chargers went 10 for 12 from the free throw line and the Tigers didn't record one free throw in the half. Free throws not only made a difference in the first half but for the rest of the game and the Chargers were able to take advantage of that. Daniel Grant (Middletown, N.Y.) finished the first half leading all scorers with 11 points and also recorded six rebounds for the Chargers. Sayon Charles (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the team in rebounds with seven and scored six points.
The Chargers continued to control the game as the second half started by building their largest lead of the game which was 19 points. The Tigers fought back in the final couple of minutes but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Chargers improved to 11-4 (5-1 CACC) after the 78-71 win over the Tigers. The Chargers were able to cash in on their free throw attempts by going 21 for 27 with Charles making 12 of 14 free throws and finished with a team high and high for the game of 21.
Charles pulled down 13 rebounds for the Chargers capping off a strong performance by finishing with a double-double. Grant finished with 20 points for the Chargers and added eight rebounds and six assists. TyJon Gilmore (Watervliet, N.Y.) had himself a career night by scoring a career high 16 points and recorded four rebounds in the win. Gilmore went 5 for 7 from three-point range with a great offensive performance off the bench.
The Chargers will be back in action on Saturday January 13th when they visit The University of the Sciences at 3:00 PM. The Chargers will be looking to extend their winning streak to four games as they continue their great start to the season.
