CHARGERS EDGE GEORGIAN COURT LIONS

(1/21/18) The Dominican College men's basketball team improved to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play after passing by the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University, 76-72, this afternoon in a game played on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.

Junior forward Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn.) led three Chargers in double figures with 22 points and had four rebounds.
Guard Daniel Grant (Middletown, N.Y.) netted 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, while rookie TyJon Gilmore (Watervliet, N.Y.) contributed 16 points (5-7 from the floor and 3-5 from the three-point arc) and four steals in 22 minutes of action.
Sayon Charles (Staten Island, N.Y.) grabbed five boards and Jonathan Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) had four assists, four steals and four rebounds, to go along with six points.
Georgian Court (3-15, 3-7) scored the first six points of the contest and led 26-10 with 8:25 to play in the half. The Charger offense came alive with 15 unanswered points to cut the lead to 26-25 with under five mintues to left. A Tony Ellington, Jr three-point basket broke the run, but Dominican countered with a 5-2 spurt to tie the score, 30-30, with 3:14 on the clock. Grant continued the Charger run with a trey and and DC closed out first half play on a 8-5 run to take a 38-35 edge at the intermission.
The game was tied 53-all with under 12 minutes to go when four straight Gilmore points rebuilt a 57-53 edge and later a dunk from Gardener would give Dominican their biggest advantage, 68-58 with under five to play. GCU fought back and cut the lead to a single possession, 73-70 with 19 ticks left, but Gilmore hit two key free throws with 13 seconds left to put DC up 75-70 and they hung on for the 76-72 victory.
The Chargers continue their three-game homestand on Wednesday night as they take on CACC North Division rival, Bloomfield College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
