MEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS ON LATE TO BEAT LIGHTNING

Wilmington, Del. (2/17/18) The Chargers traveled to Goldey-Beacom College for a CACC match-up with the Lightning on Saturday. Dominican is currently in second place of the north division of the conference standings and had a tough match-up in the Lightning who currently hold sole possession of first place in the south division standings. The Chargers entered today's game with only three games remaining on the schedule for the 2017-2018 season.
Early on in the first half, the Lightning scored the game's first nine points and kept the Chargers scoreless through the first three minutes. The Chargers stormed back to tie the game at 21-21 with just over five minutes remaining. The Lightning were able to extend out to an eight-point lead but the Chargers answered again to cut the deficit and send the game into halftime with a score of 35-33 in favor of Goldey-Beacom.
Daniel Grant (Middletown, NY) led the Chargers in the first half with 16 points on five for seven from the field. Grant hit both shots he took from three-point range and went four for six from the free throw line. The Chargers as a team shot 40% from the field in the half 30% from three-point range and made ten of seventeen free throws. Corey Taite led the scoring for the Lightning by scoring 12 points with 7 of his first half points coming from the foul line. The Lightning shot 33.3% from the field and went 14 for 19 from the free throw line for 73.7%.
In the second half, the Lightning held the lead almost all of the second half. In a back and forth and very competitive second half, the Chargers stayed within striking distance. The Lighting jumped out to a ten-point lead halfway through the half but the Chargers answered back to cut into the deficit. The Chargers tied the game at 69-69 and took a one-point lead with just over three minutes left to play. After the Lightning regained the lead, Grant tied the game back up with a pair of free throws.
With less than a minute to play, Grant scored again to give the Chargers a late two-point lead and were able to hang on for a big 75-73 win over the Lightning. The Chargers improved to 19-7 (13-4 CACC). The Lighting fell to 17-9 (13-4 CACC).
Grant finished with 23 points in the win while Jonathan Garcia (Springfield, MA) finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds in the win. Ian Gardener (Norwalk, CT) added 13 points and Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, NY) finished with 8 points. For the Lightning, Taite finished the game with 21 points scored to lead his team while Dante Thompson scored 18 points in the loss. The Chargers finished the game shooting 46.3% from the field and the Lightning shot 34.5% from the field.
The Chargers now enter the final week of the regular season and will host Concordia College in their last home game on Wednesday February 21st at 7:30 PM for Senior Night. The Chargers will wrap up regular season play on Saturday February 24th when they visit Nyack College.
