MEN'S BASKETBALL EARNS OT WIN OVER UDC

Washington, D.C. (12/29/18) The Chargers traveled to the University of District of Columbia and earned an overtime win to improve their overall record to 8-2 on the season. The Firebirds fall to 7-5 overall on the season.
The Chargers led by as many as nine points at the beginning of the first half, but UDC took over the lead and held a 38-30 advantage over DC at halftime. The Chargers, as a team, shot 50% from the field. Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn.) led the Chargers in the opening half with 9 points and Tavon Ginyard (Brentwood, N.Y.) finished the first half with eight points and made two of three three-point shots.
Zachary Olukanni led the Firebirds in the first half with 10 points. UDC shot 38.9% from the field in the first half.
The Firebirds led by as many as ten points in the second half. Dominican trailed for most of the half. DC cut into the lead but the Firebird would answer by regaining a larger lead. The Chargers regained the lead late in the second half with just over two minutes to play.
UDC tied the game with less than a minute to go and the score remained tied at 74-74 when the half came to an end to go to overtime.
Gardener added 10 points in the second half and Ginyard finished the half with 11 points. Daniel Grant (Middletown, N.Y.) added nine points in the second half to help the comeback.
The Firebirds led by six points over the Chargers in the overtime period, but the Chargers used an 11-2 run to finish the game and secure the win in overtime.
Gardener ended the game with a double-double and 23 points with 10 rebounds. Ginyard ended with 22 points in the win. Daniel Grant contributed 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
The Chargers will be back in action on Wednesday, January 2nd when they host the University of New Haven. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
