STRONG SECOND HALF LEADS CHARGERS OVER FIREBIRDS

(11/12/21) The Dominican College men's basketball team outscored the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 47-29, in the second half to earn the 82-66 victory tonight in game two of the 2021 Charger Tip-Off Classic. In the opening game of the tournament, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans defeated Nyack College, 102-83.

With the win, Dominican improves to 1-0 on the season.
Senior Jalen Burgess (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) led all scorers as he came off the bench to score 27 points and pull down nine rebounds.
Wahaad Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 18 points (8-13 from the floor), while rookie Joseph Merrill (Derry, N.H.) tallied 14 points (4-8 from the three point arc) and five assists in his collegiate debut.
Forward Justin Copman (Cumberland, Md.) recorded the team's only double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
For the Firebirds (0-1), Juanye Colon led the team with 15 points.
UDC led 37-24 with 5:42 remaining in the first half, when DC charged back into the contest by going on an 11-0 run, with Burgess recording the first seven points of the run, to cut the lead to 37-35 with just over a minute left in the half.
A Firebird dunk put them ahead 45-40 with 17:25 left in regulation when Dominican used a 21-9 tear to pull in front, 61-54, as Johnson netted the first 10 points.
DC would take their biggest lead of the game with 15 ticks left on the clock as Johnson netted the final bucket of the contest for the 82-66 win.
Dominican will take on St. Thomas Aquinas College tomorrow night at 6pm in the Hennessy Center.
