Hillburn, N.Y. (4/1/17) The Dominican College men's lacrosse team topped the visiting Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College, 9-5, this afternoon in a East Coast Conference (ECC) game played at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
With the win, Dominican improves to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
STAC began the scoring, but Dominican used a 3-0 run, spanning less than two minutes, to claim a 3-1 edge. Sophomore Ryan Ward (Galloway, N.J.) started the run with a goal off the assist from Kevin Mayer (Wantagh, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Wiberly (Setauket, N.Y.) followed 30 seconds later with his first game score off the dish from Kevin Meaney (Franklin Square, N.Y.). Freshman Nick D'Alessandro (Levittown, N.Y.) completed the run with an unassisted goal with 9:21 left in the quarter for the 3-1 lead. The Spartans concluded the first quarter with a goal to cut the lead to 3-2.
Midfielder Marcos Pierce (Middleburg, Va.) scored the only goal of the second quarter off the pass from D'Alessandro and Dominican went into the intermission with a 4-2 advantage.
The Spartans outscored Dominican 2-1 in the third frame with the Charger score going to Meaney with 8:13 left to make the score 5-4.
The Chargers began the final 15 minutes on a 2-0 spurt with Meaney recording the man-up goal off the pass from Wiberly and freshman Michael Reyes (East Meadow, N.Y.) followed with his first game goal off the dish from Chris Heegan (North Babylon, N.Y.) to increase their lead to 7-4. A Spartan goal broke the run, but Dominican closed out the quarter with the final two goals off the sticks of Evan Heegan (North Babylon, N.Y.) and Wiberly for the final 9-5 victory.
Meaney and Wiberly finished with two goals each.
Goalie Matthew Sandelier (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) had 13 saves in the win.
Dominican returns to action next Friday afternoon as they take on Mercy College in ECC action. Game time is set for 4pm at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
