CHARGERS DROP SEASON OPENER TO REDHAWKS
Orangeburg, N.Y. (2/10/24) The Dominican University New York men's lacrosse team dropped their season opener this afternoon to the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University on Sister Mary Eileen O'Brien Field.
This afternoon's game was the season opener for both teams and Roberts Wesleyan came away with the 15-6 victory to improve to 1-0 while the Chargers fall to 0-1.
Freshman goalkeeper Bryce Layton (Glenville, N.Y.) made 15 saves but suffered the loss while Redhawk keeper Garrett Kayser also made 15 saves and earned the win.
Zachary Souza (Stratford, Conn.) led the Chargers with a hat trick on a team-high 11 shots. Cole Vencak (Smithtown, N.Y.), Kyle Benedetto (Wantagh, N.Y.), and Eric Greenwood (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) each scored one goal.
Brenden O'Connor (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) recorded two assists while Terence O'Loughlin (Nanuet, N.Y.) added one assist.
The Redhawks opened the game with three first quarter goals and held the 3-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Less than one minute into the second quarter, Souza scored an unassisted goal and the Chargers trailed 3-1.
The Redhawks answered with seven unanswered goals and took a 10-1 lead into halftime.
Vencak scored at the start of the third quarter to end the run but the Redhawks added three more goals before the fourth quarter.
Dominican outscored RWU 4-2 in the fourth quarter but the Redhawks were able to secure the 15-6 victory.
Dan Doviak led the way for RWU with a game-high six goals and also picked up three assists. Jordan Deats scored three goals while teammate Gunner MacMillan added two goals.
The Chargers held the edge in ground balls 34-31 with Patrick Roderka (Warwick, N.Y.) finishing with a team-high six. Roderka also won 13 of 21 faceoffs.
The Chargers return to action Saturday, February 24th when they host the Saints of D'Youville University on O'Brien Field at 11:00 AM.
