CHARGERS UPEND YELLOW JACKETS
Springfield, Mass. (3/2/24) The Dominican University New York men's volleyball team improved to 2-0 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play and 8-7 overall after defeating the Yellow Jackets of American International College 3-2 this afternoon in a match played in Henry Butova Gymnasium.
The Chargers won the opening set by the score of 25-23, but AIC rebounded to take set two, 25-20. DUNY regained a 2-1 match lead with a 25-17 set three win, however the Yellow Jackets countered once again with a 25-22 fourth set win to force the decisive fifth set. In the final frame, the Chargers recorded 10 kills and a .429 attacke percentage to lead them to a 15-11 set win and 3-2 match victory.
The fifth set was tied at 8-8 when Dominican scored three straight points to claim a 10-8 advantage. Tommaso Falchi (Spoleto, Italy) later made the score 12-9 with a kill and an AIC attack error would put DUNY at match point. Phinehas Wiley (Cedarburg, Wis.) closed out the match with a kill off the pass from Luke Koster (Geneva, Ill.) for the 15-11 set win and 3-2 match victory.
Wiley led the Chargers with 23 kills and seven defensive digs.
Outside hitter Ayden Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) tallied 10 kills and six digs, while setter Koster finished with 40 assists.
Falchi recorded five kills and five block assists and Tyler Roukey (Hudson, Ohio) had a team leading 12 defensive digs.
Dominican returns to action next Saturday afternoon when they travel to Roberts Wesleyan University.
