Brookhaven, NY (5/15/10) The Dominican College softball team, ranked seventh in the 2010 NCAA East Regional Tournament, lost to the third seeded Pioneers of C. W. Post University, 2-1, this afternoon in a game played at Golden Lions Field. The loss eliminates the Lady Chargers from the double elimination tournament.
The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single to left field.
Dominican tied the game in the top of the third as senior right fielder Kelli Rehm (Livingston, NJ) led off the inning with an infield single. A sacrifice bunt from shortstop Julie Plante (Swansea, MA) moved Rehm into scoring position and a groundout to first base off the bat of pitcher Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH) allowed Rehm to move to third base. Senior third basemen Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) won a tough battle at the plate and delivered a key single up-the-middle to plate Rehm and tie the contest at 1-1.
C.W. Post scored the game winning run in their bottom half of the third inning as a batter bunted the ball and advanced to third on a DC throwing error with one out. The next batter singled up-the-middle to score the go ahead run that would later lift the Pioneers to the 2-1 victory.
In the top of the seventh, seniors Danielle Garrison (Coatesville, PA) and Lauren Galladay (Aberdeen, NJ) hit back-to-back singles with one out to put the tying run on second base, but the Pioneer pitcher recorded the final two outs by getting the Lady Chargers to hit two fly balls.
Childers took the loss (22-9) after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits.
The loss was DC's second of the East Regional Tournament after suffering a 6-2 setback to #2 Dowling College yesterday and eliminates the team from the tournament.
The Lady Chargers end their season with a 37-16 overall record.
