Lakewood, NJ (5/5/11) The third seeded Lady Chargers of Dominican College, along with top-seeded Georgian Court University, went 2-0 during the first day of action of the 2011 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Tournament to advance to the winner's bracket. The two will meet Friday at 2:00 pm, with the winner moving on to Saturday's championship round.
No. 2 Concordia College and No. 8 Felician College both went 0-2 Thursday and exited the double-elimination tournament.
Georgian Court upended No. 8 Felician, 8-3, and followed with a 4-3 victory over No. 5 Caldwell College. Dominican opened the day with a 4-0 win over No. 6 Post University and capped it with a 6-3 win over No. 7 Bloomfield College. Friday's 2:00 pm game between GCU and Dominican will be a rematch of the 2010 championship round, which went to the Lady Chargers.
Game One: The Lady Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Deidre Jeppson (Sylmar, CA) led off the inning by getting hit by-a-pitch and advanced to third on the single by Julie Plante (Swansea, MA) to put two runners on. An infield groundout off the bat of Paige Berzak (Cypress, CA) brought home Jeppson.
DC added three more runs in the fifth as Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH) hit a one out single and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by Jeppson, however an Eagle error on the play allowed Jeppson to reach base. A single to center field from Plante loaded the bases and two runs scored on the single to right feild from Berazk, as she tallied her third RBI of the contest. Catcher Ashley Corrao (Staten Island, NY) reloaded the bases after being hit by-a- pitch and Plante scored on the sacrifice fly ball to right field hit by Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun, VA) to put the Lady Chargers on top, 4-0.
Plante and Berzak each had two hits for DC, while Berzak had three RBIs.
Sophomore left-handed hurler, Childers, improved to 19-6 on the season with the complete game victory, limiting Post to just two hits and striking out three.
Game Two: Bloomfield struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but DC rallied with two runs in the bottom stanza to take a 2-1 advantage. Jeppson led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence and designated player Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun, VA) later followed with a RBI single down the left field line.
DC added two runs in each of the second and third innings to go ahead 6-3. In the second inning, Childers laid down a sacrifice bunt which allowed a run to score and Berzak later followed with a two out RBI single to right field. Left fielder Ashley Martinez (Bloomfield, NJ) singled through the left side to plate Corrao and second basemen Brielle Kerscher (Staten Island, NY) followed with an RBI single also through the left side to make the score 6-3.
Junior right-handed pitcher Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) got the win (13-8) in four innings of work, allowing three runs on four hits. Reliever Childers picked up the save in three innings of work.
With the two wins Dominican improves to 32-16 overall.
