LADY CHARGERS SWEEP DOWLING COLLEGE

Shirley, N.Y. (3/19/15)  The Dominican College softball squad swept a non-conference double-header from host, Dowling College, in games played this afternoon at Golden Lions Field.  Dominican rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the opener to win, 7-5 and scored runs in the first three innings of the night cap to come away with the 9-3 victory.

Game One:  The Golden Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning when the Lady Chargers rallied with a run in the second and the third inning to knot the score at 2-2.  In the second, rightfielder Brianna Arends (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit an RBI single through the right side and Alyssa Schwed (Kinnelon, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch in the third.

Dowling rallied with runs in the fourth and fifth innings to regain the 4-2 advantage, but the Lady Charger bats came alive in the sixth inning as five runs crossed the plate to take their first lead of the game at 7-4.  A two-run blast over the right field fence from catcher Shannon Haukap* (Edmonds, Wash.) got things going in the winning and three batters later, Elontay Collins (San Diego, Calif.) brought a run home on a single.  CACC Co-Rookie of the Week, Jillian Regan (Staten Island, N.Y.) put two more runs on the board with a home run to right centerfield.

The Golden Lions scored a run in the bottom of the seventh for the final 7-5 score.

Haukap, Regan and Arends each had two hits in the win, while Haukap and Regan had two RBIs each.

Freshman Jenna Maska (Warren, Mass.) picked up the win (2-1) in 6 2/3 innings of work, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and two strikeouts.

Madison Dove (Cypress, Calif.) got her first collegiate save after coming in to record the final out of the game.

Game Two:  Regan got things going in the first for the Lady Chargers on the RBI single up-the-middle and second basemen MacKenzie Wise (Middletown, N.Y.) added two more runs in the second with a double to centerfield.  The third run of the stanza scored on a passed ball to lift the Lady Chargers ahead 4-1.

The third inning saw Regan record her second RBI of the game with a solo blast over the centerfield fence to make the score 5-1.

In the Dominican half of the fifth inning, sophomore Ariana Trembone (Staten Island, N.Y.) produced a run scoring single to left field to increase the lead to 7-1.  Dowling answered with two runs in the bottom stanza to cut the lead to, 7-3. 

The Lady Chargers got two more runs in the top of the seventh on the infield single from Collins and a sacrifice fly ball off the bat of designated player Anne Shiebler (Wrentham, Mass.) for the final 9-3 score.

Regan and Trembone had three hits a-piece in the win.

Dove got the complete game victory (2-3) after allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits and five strikeouts.

With the sweep Dominican improves to 4-8 on the season.
