LADY CHARGERS EARN SPLIT WITH UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES

Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/29/15)  The Dominican College softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header with the visiting Devils from the University of the Sciences in games played this afternoon at the South Orangetown Little League Field.  The Devils took the opener, 5-2, while the Lady Chargers rallied to win the night cap, 5-2.

With the split, Dominican is now 8-10 overall and 4-2 in CACC play.

Game One:  The Devils claimed the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second stanza, but the Lady Chargers answered right back with a run as second basemen MacKenzie Wise (Middletown, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to right field to bring home the game-tying run.

USCI regained a 2-1 lead with a run in the fourth, added another in the fifth and used a two-run sixth inning to pull ahead 5-1.  Dominican scored a run in the final frame as Wise picked up her second RBI of the contest on a double to center field for the final 5-2 score.

Wise and catcher Shannon Haukap* (Edmonds, Wash.) each had two hits for the Lady Chargers in the loss.

Starter Jenna Maska (Warren, Mass) suffered the loss (3-3) in 4 2/3 innings of work, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two strikeouts.  Emily Larsen (Midlothian, Ill.) pitched the remaining 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three strikeouts.

Game Two:  The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when CACC Rookie of the Week, Jillian Regan (Staten Island, N.Y.) delivered a two out run scoring double to center field for the 1-0 advantage.

The Devils rallied with two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Lady Chargers charged back with four runs on two hits and capitalizing on three USCI fielding errors to regain the 5-2 lead.  Haukap and center fielder Jacqueline Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas) had run scoring hits in the inning.

Brianna Arends* (Raritan, N.J.) went 2-3 in the win.

Rookie Madison Dove (Cypress, Calif.) picked up the win to improve to 4-3 on the season, allowing two runs on four hits and three strikeouts.  Larsen got her first save of 2015 after pitching two innings, allowing just one hit and one strikeout.

Dominican is scheduled to be in action tomorrow afternoon as they host non-conference opponent, Mercy College.
