SOFTBALL TOPS MERCY COLLEGE MAVERICKS

Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/30/15)  The Dominican College softball team improved to 10-10 overall after sweeping the visiting Mavericks of Mercy College in non-conference games played at the South Orangetown Little League Field.  The Lady Chargers took game one, 3-1 and won the finale, 4-2.

Game One:  The Lady Chargers struck for two runs in the bottom of the second inning as senior center fielder Jacqueline Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas) hit her first home run of the year, this one being a two-run shot to left field for the 2-0 lead.

The Mavericks brought themselves within a run, 2-1 in the fifth with a solo home run.  Gonzalez struck again for DC in the bottom of the sixth inning as she hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Lady Chargers the eventual 3-1 win.

Gonzalez went 2-3 with three RBIs and one run scored.  Elontay Collins (San Diego, Calif.) collected two hits.

Freshman Madison Dove (Cypress, Calif.) picked up the complete game win, allowing one run on five hits and three strikeouts.

Game Two:  The Mavericks scored first in game two with a run in the first inning, but the Lady Chargers came back in the second stanza as catcher Shannon Haukap* (Edmonds, Wash.) had an RBI single through the right side and Brianna Arends* (Raritan, N.J.) followed with a fielder's choice that allowed a second run to score.

Dominican added two more runs as second basemen MacKenzie Wise (Middletown, N.Y.) singled to right center field to plate two runs and give DC the 4-1 win.

Wise went 3-3 in the game with two RBIs.

Haukap and Caitlyn Hults (Carlstadt, N.J.) had two hits a-piece.

Jenna Maska (Wrentham, Mass.) got the win (4-3) in five innings of work, allowing one run on five hits and six strikeouts.

Emily Larsen (Midlothian, Ill.) came in to earn her second save of the year, pitching two innings and allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

The Lady Charger are scheduled to be in action tomorrow afternoon at Concordia College.
