Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/12/16) The Dominican College softball team improved to 4-6 on the season after sweeping the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 4-1 and 2-0, this afternoon in a non-conference double-header played on the DC Softball Field.

Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/12/16) The Dominican College softball team improved to 4-6 on the season after sweeping the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 4-1 and 2-0, this afternoon in a non-conference double-header played on the DC Softball Field.
Game One: All of the scoring in the opening game was done in the first stanza as the Owls got a two out solo home run over the left field fence to take the early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the first, Brianna Espino (Holland, Ohio) and Brianna Arends* (Raritan, N.J.) each were hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded to plate runs and second basemen Ariana Trembone (Staten Island, N.Y.) delievered a two out single down the right field line to bring home two more runs to pull ahead 4-1.
Both teams had four hits in the game.
Starter Desiree Joines (Stewartstown, Pa.) picked up the win (3-2) in five innings of work, allowing one run on four hits in five innings. Emily Larsen (Midlothian, Ill.) got her first save of the season in two innings of shut out relief.
Game Two: Dominican got on the scoreboard in the first as senior catcher Shannon Haukap* (Edmonds, Wash.) led off the inning with her first home run of the season on a shot that went over the right field fence.
DC added a run in the fourth as junior centerfielder Caitlyn Hults (Carlstadt, N.J.) hit a run-scoring single to left centerfield to bring home Shannon Truppi* (Little Ferry, N.J.) for the 2-0 advantage and eventual win.
Hults, Haukap and third basemen Taylor Gilligan (Medford, N.J.) all had two hits in the win.
Jenna Maska (Warren, Mass.) improved to 1-1 on the season as she recorded her first shut out of the season, scattering just three hits and two strikeouts.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow as they open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season on the road at Holy Family University.
