Waterbury, Conn. (3/15/16) The Dominican College softball team upended host, Post University, 5-2 this afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game played at LaMoy Field. Game two was postponed due to the length of game one.
Dominican struck first with a run in the third inning as shortstop Jillian Regan (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on an error which allowed Emily Luzetsky (Bel Air, Md.) to score and give DC a 1-0 lead.
Post tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a run-scoring double, but DC re-took a 2-1 advantage in the fifth as designated player Elontay Collins (San Diego, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice and brought home Arianna Trembone (Staten Island, N.Y.) for the lead.
The Eagles rallied again with a run in the seventh to force extra innings. In the ninth, Trembone doubled to center field to score Caitlyn Hults (Carlstadt, N.J.), who had been placed on second base to start the inning. Two batters later catcher CACC Player of the Week Shannon Haukap* (Edmonds, Wash.) singled up-the-middle to plate Trembone and Mary Curatolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) to give Dominican the 5-2 advantage.
Post had two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but Emily Larsen* (Midlothian, Ill.) recorded the game-ending groundout for the victory.
Larsen picked up the win in four innings of relief (2-2), allowing one run on three hits.
Starter Desiree Joines (Stewartstown, Pa.) went five innings in the no decision, allowing one run on six hits and four strikeouts.
Trembone, Haukap and Brianna Espino (Holland, Ohio) all had two hits in the win, while Trembone scored two runs and Haukap had two RBIs.
With the win, Dominican improves to 7-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Game two will be made up at a different date.
