LONG BALL LEADS LADY CHARGERS TO SWEEP BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE
Orangeburg, N.Y. (4/6/16) The Dominican College softball squad won two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games from the visiting Bears of Bloomfield College in games played this afternoon at the DC Softball Field. DC won the opener, 4-2 and took game two by the score of 10-3.
Orangeburg, N.Y. (4/6/16) The Dominican College softball squad won two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games from the visiting Bears of Bloomfield College in games played this afternoon at the DC Softball Field. DC won the opener, 4-2 and took game two by the score of 10-3.
Game One: The Bears put two runs on the board in their half of the second inning, taking advantage of a Lady Charger throwing error and a single up-the-middle.
Dominican cut the lead in half in th bottom stanza as senior catcher Shannon Haukap* (Edmonds, Wash.) singled to left field which brought home left fielder Brianna Espino (Holland, Ohio), who had led off the inning with a single to right field.
The Lady Chargers took the lead in the third as a run scored on a Bear throwing error and pinch hitter Anne Shiebler (Wrentham, Mass.) delivered a two-run single to left center field for the 4-2 lead and eventual win.
Haukap finished with two hits and one RBI, while Shiebler had two runs batted in.
Starter Jenna Maska (Warren, Mass.) went 3 1/3 innings in the no decision, allowing two runs on five hits.
Reliever Emily Larsen* (Midlothian, Ill.) got the win (3-3) in three innings of relief, scattering two hits and striking out four batters. Desiree Joines (Stewartstown, Pa.) picked up her first save of the season.
Game Two: Dominican (15-11, 8-3 CACC) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with two runs on a throwing error and a double down the left field line off the bat of freshman Taylor Gilligan (Medford, N.J.).
The Bears rallied with two runs in the second frame on a two-run home run to center field.
DC countered with a three-run third inning as designated player Elontay Collins (San Diego, Calif.) blasted a two-run shot down the right field line and shortstop Jillian Regan (Staten Island, N.Y.) folllowed two batters later with a solo home run to center field to regain the 5-2 lead.
BC added a run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk, but Dominican got the run back and added another in bottom of the fifth on a squeeze bunt by Regan and a sacrifice bunt from Espino to increase the lead to 7-3.
The Lady Chargers used a two-run home run from Haukap to make the score 9-3 and plated the final run of the game on a single from Espino for the final 10-3 win.
Four different Dominican players had three hits and two RBIs in the game.
Joines got the win (9-5) in six innings of work, allowing three runs on two hits.
Jennifer Paride (Stonington, Conn.) came in to pitch a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
