New Haven, Conn. (2/2/18) -- Defending champion Caldwell University on Friday earned the first-place spot in the 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Preseason Coaches Poll, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. The Cougars received 193 points in the voting, including 11 first-place votes. The voting for the poll was conducted by the league's 14 head coaches in the sport.
The Cougars are slated to return several All-CACC performers from a season ago, highlighted by senior catcher Marisa Monasseri, who has claimed the CACC Player-of-the-Year honor each of the past two campaigns. Led by head coach Dean Johnson, Caldwell knocked off then-Philadelphia University, in the conference championship final to win the program's second CACC crown in the last three seasons.
Rounding out the top three in the 2018 preseason poll included Wilmington University (2nd, 176 pts, 2 1st-place votes) and Dominican College (3rd, 169 pts, 1 1st). WilmU joined Caldwell last season as the two CACC representatives in the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. The Wildcats claimed the 2016 CACC Championship. Dominican has also served as one of the region's strongest squads for the last several years and reached the CACC Championship Final back in 2015.
