SOFTBALL WINS THREE GAMES IN ONE DAY TO ADVANCE TO CACC CHAMPIONSHIP
Lakewood, N.J. (5/4/18) The Dominican College softball team won three elimination games today to earn a spot in the 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Title game against the Cougars of Caldwell University to be played tomorrow on the campus of Georgian Court University. Dominican, the fourth-seed in the tournament, defeated #7 Holy Family University, 8-7, edged #2 Wilmington University, 7-6 and upended #3 Georgian Court University, 6-3 to advance to the championship game.

(5/4/18) The Dominican College softball team won three elimination games today to earn a spot in the 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Title game against the Cougars of Caldwell University to be played tomorrow on the campus of Georgian Court University. Dominican, the fourth-seed in the tournament, defeated #7 Holy Family University, 8-7, edged #2 Wilmington University, 7-6 and upended #3 Georgian Court University, 6-3 to advance to the championship game.
Game One: In their first game of the day, the Lady Chargers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they scored two runs in the first on the RBI singles from Alyssa Schwed (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Taylor Gilligan (Medford, N.J.). They added two the lead in the third inning as Schwed blasted a two-run home run and increased the lead 8-0 in the fourth on the solo home run off the bat of Shalei Kraft (Waverly, N.Y.) and the three-run home run from Schwed.
The Tigers got two runs back in the fifth and made it interesting in the seventh with five runs, but Jennifer Paride (Stonington, Conn.) picked up the final out of the game with a strikeout to give the Lady Chargers the 8-7 win.
Schwed went 3-4 in the game with two home runs and six RBIs.
Game Two: Dominican got off to a fast start against the Wildcats of Wilmington University as they scored two runs as seniors Taylor Daniels (Watervliet, N.Y.) had an RBI ground out and senior shortstop Jillian Regan (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a run-scoring infield single. The Lady Chargers added three more runs in the second as designated player Alyssa Siess (Queens, N.Y.) led off the inning with a home run down the left field line and four batters latter, right fielder Samantha Fitzgerald (Fishkill, N.Y.) hit a two-run shot over the left center field fence to increase the lead to 5-0. Wilmington put runs on the board in their half of the second and third inning to cut the lead to 5-4.
The Lady Chargers added a run in the fourth on the sacrifice fly ball from Schwed for a two-run lead, but the 'Cats scored a run in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game, 6-6. In the top of the seventh, Daniels delivered a one out solo home run over the center field fence for the 7-6 lead and eventual win.
Paride (14-7) picked up her second win of the day in one and 1/3 innings of relief.
Fitzgerald and Daniels recorded two RBIs each in the win.
Game Three: A sacrifice fly ball gave the Lions of GCU the 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first inning. Dominican brought home two runs in the top of the third as left fielder Rajene Bowe (Ellendale, Del.) and Fitzgerald had run-scoring singles to turn the tables and give DC the 2-1 edge. In the fourth, infield singles from Gilligan and catcher Emily Luzetsky (Bel Air, Md.) plated two runs and pinch runner GeorgieRose Super (Poughkeepsie N.U.) stole home to increase the lead to 5-1.
The Lions scored two runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Lady Chargers got a run back in the sixth on the leadoff home run off the bat of Gilligan for the 6-3 lead and victory.
Schwed and Gilligan had two hits each.
Freshman Sara Gedeon (Hudson, Ohio) got the win in 4 2/3 innings of work, while Paride picked up the save.
In order to bring home the 2018 CACC Softball Championship, the Lady Chargers will need to defeat #1 Caldwell University twice as the Cougars have gone 3-0 in tournament play thus far. First pitch is slated for 12pm tomorrow afternoon on the campus of Georgian Court University.
