Orangeburg, N.Y. (4/18/23) The Dominican University New York softball team fell in both games of a CACC doubleheader at the South Orangetown Little League this afternoon.
The Lady Chargers fall to 8-28 overall and 4-12 in conference play. The Purple Knights improve to 23-18 overall and 13-7 in conference play.
Game One: Taylor Yates opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with her first two-run homer of the game to put the Purples Knights ahead 2-0.
Giovanna Salcido (Diamond Bar, Calif.) homered in the bottom of the second inning for her 10th of the year to put the Lady Chargers on the board.
The Purple Knights extended their lead after Yates' second two-run homer of the game in the top of the third inning.
In the fourth inning, an RBI-double by Gabby Simms put UB ahead 5-1. Mya Jones followed with a two-run homer to give the Purple Knights a 7-1 advantage.
UB added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning after Angela Oros hit a pinch hit solo homer and Mya Jones followed with her second two-run homer of the game.
Zarate Vise pitched a complete game and earned her 15th win of the season. Emily Baxter (Bucoda, WA) threw six innings and recorded three strikeouts but suffered the loss.
Game Two: Madison Walker (Southampron, N.J.) put the Lady Chargers ahead 2-0 after a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning for her eighth of the year.
UB struck for 10 runs in the top of the second inning to take a 10-2 lead. UB extended the lead in the top half of the third inning with five more runs for the 15-2 lead.
UB added another run in the fourth inning and held a 16-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Lady Chargers fought their way back into the game with a seven run rally with RBI-hits by Emily Angulo (Wilmington, Calif.), Chloe McIntosh (Menifee, Calif.), and Walker. Salcido delivered a big grand slam for her second homer of the day.
Walker drove in her fourth RBI of the game in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 16-10. Angulo drove in her second RBI of the game in the seventh inning.
Toni-Jo Lopez (Sylmar, Calif.) crushed a three-run homer to cut the UB lead to two runs later in the seventh inning. The rally fell short however as the Purple Knights were able to hold on for a 16-14 victory.
The Lady Chargers return to action on Thursday when they host Holy Family University for a conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM.
