Orangeburg, NY (2/17/12) The Dominican College department of athletics will sponsor "Play 4 Kay" Day during the home basketball doubleheader on February 18th at the Hennessy Center against the Holy Family University, joining the national initiative by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
Play 4 Kay, named for longtime North Carolina State University women's basketball coach Kay Yow, exists to raise awareness and funds for research of women's cancers. Its official charity is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Yow twice successfully battled breast cancer before succumbing to the disease in 2009.
On DC's Play 4 Kay Day, the Dominican women's and men's basketball teams will wear pink T-shirts during pre-game warm-ups. Anyone attending the games is encouraged to wear pink, the color of the official breast cancer ribbon.
The women's game starts at 1 pm on Feb. 18, with the men's game following at 3 pm. Throughout the afternoon, athletics department representatives will be soliciting donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
The Play 4 Kay (formerly Pink Zone) initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising awareness for women's cancers on the basketball court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. More than 1,300 schools and organizations are involved. More information is available at www.play4kay.org.
