LADY CHARGERS PREVAIL OVER VAQUERAS
Bayamón, Puerto Rico (12/19/15) The Dominican College Women’s Basketball team defeated the University of Puerto Rico at Bayamón, 57-52, this afternoon in a non-conference game played on the campus of UPR- Bayamón.
Bayamón, Puerto Rico (12/19/15) The Dominican College Women's Basketball team defeated the University of Puerto Rico at Bayamón, 57-52, this afternoon in a non-conference game played on the campus of UPR- Bayamón. With the win, the Lady Chargers improve to 7-5 overall.
Senior Déja Gabbidon (Teaneck, N.J.) led the Lady Chargers with a game best 22 points and 17 rebounds, while shooting 9-20 from the floor.
Senior guard Shannon McGill* (Staten Island, N.Y.) contributed twelve points after four baskets from beyond the arc. Senior Nicole Awoonor-Renner (Mount Vernon, N.Y.)provided the team with five points and ten rebounds off the bench. Junior Aliyah Alston (Queens, N.Y.) would supply five points, six boards, and four assists.
After a back and forth first quarter, the Lady Chargers would trail the Vaqueras of P.R.-Bayamón by two. Dominican would then take control of the second quarter, outscoring the opposition 18-8, to hold a 29-21 lead at the half. The Vaqueras would then bounce back and cut the Lady Chargers lead to five with a score of 41-36 at the end of the third. During the fourth quarter the DC lead would fade to one with 1:16 remaining in the game. However, a Gabbidon made jump shot and two made free throws by Alston gave the Lady Chargers with the 57-52 victory.
Dominican controlled the boards 54-30, along with sixteen-second chance points on the afternoon. DC shot 37% from the field on 21-57 along with 10-14 from the line to secure the win.
The Lady Chargers will host the Yellow Jackets of American International College in a non-conference contest on December 30th at 2PM on Coach Baxter Court.
