GABBIDON SCORES 1,000 POINTS AS LADY CHARGERS FALL TO WILDCATS

(1/30/16) Dominican College senior Déja Gabbidon (Teaneck, N.J.) netted her 1,000th point this afternoon as the Lady Chargers fell to the visiting Wildcats of Wilmington University, 69-66, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest played on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.

Dominican began the game with a 11-2 run for the early lead with just under eight minutes left in the quarter. WU countered with the next seven points to cut the deficit to 11-9 with 5:05 to play and would take their second lead of the frame with 23 ticks left at 18-17. Gabbidon layed the ball in the hoop with four seconds left to give DC the 19-18 lead at the end of one.
The Lady Chargers increased the lead to six points (25-10) on a jumper from Brittany Stone (Paramus, N.J.) with 6:35 left in the second quarter but the 'Cats clawed back with back-to-back threes to knot the game at 25-25. Wilmington hit a jumper shot with one tick left on the clock before the intermssion to go ahead 30-29.
Wilmington led 39-38 with just under seven minutes to go in the third quarter when DC charged ahead with a 19-2 tear to gain their biggest lead at 57-43 and ended the frame ahead 59-49.
WU opened the final quarter with a 10-0 run to re-tie the score (59-59) with 6:07 to play. Gabbidon would bring Dominican within a point as she converted two free throw opportunities, with the first making her the 26th player in Lady Charger history to score 1,000 points, and the second to make the score 65-64. The Wildcats were able to close out the game on a 4-2 run for the final 69-66 victory.
Gabbidon led all players with 22 points and grabbed a team leading 12 rebounds for the Lady Chargers.
Sophomore Rebecca Rabeiro (Midland Park, N.J.) netted 15 points, while Shannon McGill* (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 11 points.
Nicole Awoonor-Renner (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds and Jacqueline Rywalt* (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) had a team team high four assists.
With the loss, Dominican drops to 10-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
DC returns to action next Saturday afternoon when they host Philadelphia University in the 15th Annual Sue Heller Memorial Game.
