Orangeburg, N.Y. (11/26/17) The Lady Chargers hosted the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday before their next three games being on the road. Dominican was in search of their first win of the season as they entered Sunday's game with a record of 0-4. The Owls entered play winners of three straight games after opening the season dropping their first two games of the season. The Lady Chargers have not played a game since last weekend's Regina Rivera Memorial Tournament where they dropped both games they played. With two more games left to play before their first conference game of the year, the Lady Chargers were hoping for a win to help give themselves some momentum.
Dominican started off slow in the first quarter with the Owls looking like they were ready to play. The Lady Chargers never led in the game and their slow start had a lot to do with it. Before they knew it, the Lady Chargers were trailing the Owls by a score of 20-4 off of a 13-0 run from the middle of the quarter to the two-minute mark when Khay'la Latimer (Teaneck, NJ) scored her first basket of the game. Dominican was able to finish the first quarter off on a positive note scoring the quarter's last seven points to cut the deficit to 20-11 going into the second quarter.
The Owls continued their strong offensive play in the second quarter. Every time Dominican cut the Owl lead to single digits, the Owls always had an answer extending to a 13- point lead late in the quarter. The Lady Chargers were able to cut the deficit down to single digits once again before the first half was over. The Owls held a 36-28 lead heading into the break. Dominican was led by Latimer in the first half in points with seven and recorded four rebounds as well. Jasmine Gee (Englewood, NJ) added six points for the Lady Chargers in the first half and as a team, Dominican shot 88.9% from the free throw line going 8-9 from the stripe which kept them in the game for the time being. As for the Owls, they outrebounded Dominican 23-11 with Kiana Steinauer recording seven total rebounds and scored six points in the half. Africa Williams led all scorers with eight points.
Just like the first half, Dominican was unable to make their move against the Owls to cut the deficit to a couple of points. The most the Lady Chargers were able to do was get the game to single digits but the Owls always had an answer. The Owls entered the fourth and final quarter with a 49-39 lead. The Owls put the game away with a dominating final quarter outscoring the Lady Chargers 16-4 for the 65-43 victory which was their fourth straight win improving their record to 4-2 (2-0 NE-10). There were some notable team stats which were the driving force to the Owl's victory. The Owls outscored Dominican in the paint 28-18 as well as shooting 42.3% from three-point range making 11 of 26 three-point shots. The Lady Chargers shot 0-8 from three-point range which did not help their offense as they were playing catch up the entire game.
Gee led the team by scoring 12 points and added four rebounds while Samantha McClutchy (Washington Township, NJ) scored eight points and recorded eight rebounds off the bench. The Lady Chargers dropped to 0-5 (0-0 CACC) with only one game remaining before their first conference game. The Lady Chargers will travel to Queens College for a match up against the Knights on Wednesday November 29th at 5:30 PM.
