DOMINICAN OVERCOMES 20 POINT DEFICIT TO DEFEAT LIONS

Orangeburg, N.Y. (1/21/18) The Lady Chargers put a stop to their three-game losing streak with an 83-77 win over the Lions of Georgian Court University. The struggling Lions entered the game with only one conference win this season and were looking to have a strong effort against Dominican. For the Lady Chargers, Sunday's game against the Lions marks the first of three straight home games over the course of the next week.
The Lions had a strong start against the Lady Chargers in the first quarter by jumping out to a 12-3 lead. The Lions extended out to a double-digit lead as the quarter continued and maintained early control of the game for the duration of the quarter. The Lions finished their strong start by ending the first quarter with a 22-9 lead over Dominican.
The second quarter continued the same way the first quarter ended, the Lions had full control over the Lady Chargers. The Lions jumped out to what would be their largest lead of the game halfway through the second quarter. The Lady Chargers used a 10-0 run to cut the deficit down to single digits. The Lions were able to keep a double-digit lead by the end of the second quarter and took a 43-30 lead into halftime. The Lady Chargers only scored nine points in the first quarter, but came back to shift some of the momentum before the half was over by putting up 21 points in the second quarter.
Alpreshia Parker (Pocono Summit, Pa.), Rebecca Rabeiro (Midland Park, N.J.), and Taylor Nelson (Piscataway, N.J.) led the team in the half in scoring with six points each. Kyla Ramseur (Bloomfield, N.J.) recorded five steals in the half as the rest of the team recorded 12 steals overall. The Lady Chargers shot 35.7% from the field in the half and made 9 of 15 free throws. The Lions shot 56.7% from the field, went 5 of 10 from three-point range, and made all four of their free throws. Jaelyn Tweedy led all scorers in the half by recording 15 points.
The Lady Chargers came out of the break in full control and outscored the Lions 27-13 in the third quarter. Dominican tied the score at 50 marking the game's first tie since 0-0 when the game started. The Lions answered back by scoring the game's next six points. The Lady Chargers came back and with time running out Jasmine Gee (Englewood, N.J.) put the Lady Chargers on top for the first time since the beginning of the game. The fourth and final quarter was back and forth and Dominican scored the game's last eight points to secure the 83-77 win.
The Lady Chargers improved to 6-11 (5-4 CACC) with the win over the Lions, and put in a strong effort, after the slow start, to end their losing streak. Rabeiro finished with 17 points and seven steals. Ramseur finished with seven steals and also added six assists in the win. Gee led the team in rebounds with seven.
Dominican will host Bloomfield College on Wednesday January 24th at 5:30 PM as they look to build on the comeback victory over the Lions.
