SECOND HALF SURGE LEADS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OVER PURPLE KNIGHTS
Bridgeport, Conn. (1/31/24) The Dominican University New York women's basketball team outscored the University of Bridgeport, 40-26, in the second half to lead them to a 69-56 victory tonight in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action played in Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium.
With the win Dominican improves to 8-10 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
The first quarter belonged to the Purple Knights as they opened the game on a 9-2 run and closed out the period with an 18-12 lead. UB shot 53.3% from the floor and 50% from the arc in the quarter. Tamia Nunes (Worcester, Mass.) scored the quarter's last bucket for Dominican to bring the team within six points.
The tide turned in the second period as the Lady Charger offense scored 17 points to UB's 12 points to cut the deficit to 30-29 at the break. DUNY trailed 27-18 with a little over five minutes to play before the half when the team went on an 11-3 run to bring them within a point.
Dominican continued on the offensive in the third quarter as they netted 21 points to jump out to a 50-42 lead. Alexis Suarez (Poughquag, N.Y.) gave the Lady Chargers the lead on a jumper with 7:14 on the clock and they ended the quarter on a 9-6 run.
The Lady Chargers would lead by as many as 15 points (69-54) in the final frame en route to the victory.
Guard Tanasha Mills (New City, N.Y.) led all scorers with 19 points (8-9 from the foul line), four steals and three assists.
Chidinma Ndukauba (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 16 points, nine rebounds and two steals, while Suarez dished out a game best 10 assists, nine points and four caroms in the win.
Freshman Keylee Harrison (Newport News, Va.) contributed eight points and Nunes added five assists.
Dominican returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm on Coach Baxter Court.
