RALLY FALL SHORTS AS MAVERICKS UPEND LADY CHARGERS
Orangeburg, N.Y. (4/17/24) The Dominican University New York women's lacrosse team saw their ten-game winning streak come to an end today as the Mercy University Mavericks topped the host, 15-14, in non-conference action at Sister Mary Eileen O'Brien Field.
Following the game, the Lady Chargers now stand at 12-3 on the season.
Sophomore Madelyn Grella (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) led the way for the Lady Chargers with four goals and one assist for five game points.
Erica Ortiz (Slate Hill, N.Y.) added three goals, one assist and nine draw controls, while Grace DeStasio (West Hempstead, N.Y.) recorded two goals and two assists.
Junior Jordana Tomasetti (Middletown, N.J.) also scored two goals, along with Ellie Brouwer (West Long Branch, N.J.).
Midfielder Sydney Strohmayer (Rocky Point, N.Y.) tallied the other Lady Charger goal and Caitlin Costello (Seaford, N.Y.) contributed three assists in the loss.
Kristinamarie Kaszovitz (Hicksville, N.Y.) made 11 saves in 47 minutes of action, while Kathryn Ehrlinger (Levittown, N.Y.) had two saves in twelve and a half minutes.
The Mavericks offense was hot in the first half, outscoring DUNY in both the first and second quarters for an 11-6 advantage at the break.
Dominican rallied to net six unanswered goals in the third period to take their first lead of the game with 2:55 left in quarter.
In the final quarter, Brouwer and DeStasio would net goals to put the Lady Chargers ahead, but Mercy took advantage of two woman up opportunities and scored goals to close out the game on a 2-0 run and lift them to the 15-14 win.
The Lady Chargesr return to action on Saturday when they travel to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent, Georgian Court University.
