Orangeburg, N.Y. (9/6/16) The Dominican College women's volleyball team lost their home opener this evening to non-conference opponent, Southern Connecticut State University, 3-0 (20-25, 18-25, 17-25) in a match played on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
Dominican quickly built up a 11-4 advantage in the first set as rookies Gabrielle Napoleon (Springfield, Pa.) and Deanna Knopf (Hauppauge, N.Y.) recorded the block assist. Ahead 14-8, the Owls went on a 10 point run to claim an 18-14 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-20 come from behind win.
DC trailed 24-10 in the second frame when senior Kera Dexter* (Selah, Wash.) went on a eight point service run, including two aces, to bring them within six points (24-18). A service error would give SCSU the 25-18 victory.
The final set was tied 11-all when the Owls used a 7-2 run to pull in front 17-13 and the eventual 25-17 win and 3-0 match victory.
Senior Cortney Yeoman (Glenn Dale, Md.) led Dominican with six kills.
Knopf and sophomore Alexa Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) added four kills and combined for 16 defensive digs.
Dexter finished with 18 assists, while libero Angela Kim (Marlton, N.J.) had a team best 12 digs.
Dominican returns to action this weekend as they travel to Stonehill College for the Stonehill Skyhawks Invitational.
With the loss, Dominican drops to 0-5 on the season.
