LADY CHARGERS DEFEAT FELICIAN UNIVERSITY
Easton, Mass. (9/9/16) The Dominican College women's volleyball team won the opening match of the 2016 Skyhawks Invitational Tournament this afternoon by defeating, Felician University, 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21) in a match played in Merkert Gymnasium on the campus of Stonehill College.
Easton, Mass. (9/9/16) The Dominican College women's volleyball team won the opening match of the 2016 Skyhawks Invitational Tournament this afternoon by defeating, Felician University, 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21) in a match played in Merkert Gymnasium on the campus of Stonehill College.
Dominican held a 9-7 lead in the first set when the team went on an 8-2 run, capped off by a service ace from Cortney Yeoman (Glenn Dale, Md.) to give them the 17-9 advantage. Natalia Perez (Prosper, Texas) solidified the 25-17 win with a set point service ace.
The Golden Falcons recovered in the second set and used an 8-0 run to pull away with the 25-20 win.
The third set saw DC with the slim 16-14 edge when the offense erupted with a 9-3 run for the 25-17 set win and 2-1 match lead.
Felician led 13-8 in set four when the Lady Chargers went on a 4-0 run, once again ended with a service ace from Perez to knot the set at 14-all. With the decisive set tied at 20-20, a kill from freshman Gabrielle Napoleon (Springfield, Pa.) began a 3-0 DC spurt to give them the lead, 23-20. Ahead, 23-21, sophomore Alexa Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded a kill and proceeded to end the match with a service ace to give Dominican the 25-21 win and 3-1 match victory.
Yeoman led Dominican with 12 kills, while Williams added a season high 11 kills and nine defensive digs.
Outside hitter Deanna Knopf (Hauppauge, N.Y.) recorded eight kills and a career high 19 digs.
Senior setter Kera Dexter* (Selah, Wash.) had a career high 30 assists and completed the double-double with 17 digs.
With the win, Dominican improves to 1-5 on the season.
Dominican will take on St. Michael's College and Stonehill College tomorrow.
