Newark, Del. (10/14/17) The Lady Chargers traveled to Wilmington University on Saturday for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) matchup at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Wildcats, 10-13 (6-5 CACC), are right in the middle of the pack and still in contention for a playoff spot in the South division conference standings. The win today helped keep them in good position with a good portion of the season left to play. The Lady Chargers, 0-20 (0-11 CACC), have had a tough time up until this point in the season.
In the first set, both teams started out even and Dominican was staying with the Wildcats until a six-point run by the Wildcats separated themselves from a 13-7 lead to a 19-7 advantage. The first set eventually ended in Wilmington's favor by a score of 25-12. The Wildcats continued their sharp play once the second set began with a 10-0 run to start the second set. That is all they would need as Wilmington cruised to 25-15 victory in set number two to extend their match lead to 2-0.
The third set was no different as Wilmington started it off with five straight points. Another five-point run followed by a four point pretty much sealed the deal for the Wildcats who eventually locked down a 25-8 win in the third and final set for their tenth victory of the season.
Wilmington was led by Jill Braunsberg with 12.5 points, Mandy Behiels with 11 points, as well as Miranda Shaw with 9 points. All three teammates combined for 21 kills in the win. Shaw also contributed a team high 19 assists while Braunsberg recorded 13 assists and 11 digs. Addalyn Flores recorded a team high 16 digs in the win.
As for Dominican, Deanna Knopf (Hauppauge, NY) stood out and led the team in points with 8.5 and added 6 kills and 5 digs in the loss. Natalia Perez (Prosper, TX) continues to lead the team in digs this season and added 14 more which led the team in the match. Essence Boyd (Peekskil, NY) continues to be the team's top assists leader and added 11 more to her season stats against Wilmington.
The Lady Chargers will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Holy Family University at 7:00 P.M.
