Orangeburg, N.Y. (11/11/17) The Lady Chargers hosted the Bloomfield College Bears today for their final match of the 2017 season. The Bears came into this conference match contending for a playoff spot and the Lady Chargers were looking to play the role of spoiler and end the season off with a victory. It has been a tough season so far for Dominican only winning one match so far during the season and winless in the conference. A strong effort in the match today could be a boost of confidence for the returning players for next season. The key to a victory would be a fast and strong start for the Lady Chargers.
The Bears started off the first set strong and were in full control and cruised past Dominican to take the 1-0 match lead by a score of 25-8. The second set was no different as the Bears got off to another early lead. The Lady Chargers answered however to close the gap but the Bears then took back control and took the second set by a score of 25-12. Bloomfield started off the third set strong again and led 7-1 early on. Dominican called a time out and then came out strong to close the gap. Bloomfield answered again to extend their lead to 15-8. The Bears then scored the set's next four out of five points to take a 20-17 lead over the Lady Chargers. The Lady Chargers struck back again to tie the score once more at 20-20 and 22-22 until the Bears scored the next three points which eventually sealed the victory in a sweep over Dominican 3-0. The Lady Chargers finished the 2017 season with a record of 1-29 (0-19 CACC).
There were a few nice performances by a couple of players in the loss today who finished off their season in a positive way. Gabrielle Napoleon (Springfield, PA) led the team in points with 12 and recorded 10 kills along the way for the Lady Chargers. Teammate Deanna Knopf (Hauppauge, NY) contributed nine points and recorded eight kills. Essence Boyd (Peekskill, NY) added 23 assists in the loss and came out as the team leader for the season and Natalia Perez (Prosper, TX) added eight digs to her overall season stats.
With no seniors on the team, the Lady Chargers will head into the offseason after a tough year with everybody in the mix to return next season. Dominican will hope to use their team chemistry and one more year experience as a positive impact into next season.
