Pomona, N.Y. (3/28/23) The Dominican University New York baseball team fell in both games of a CACC north division doubleheader.
The Chargers fall to 2-22 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
Game One: The Bears opened the doubleheader with a 14-6 victory over the Chargers. Justice Ramirez recorded the win on the mound for the Bears.
Matt Sabene (Danbury, Conn.) started on the mound for the Chargers and recorded four strikeouts over four innings of work but suffered the loss.
After trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, N.J.) tied the game with a two-run homer to right field. Later in the inning, Jason Sosa-Rivas (Yonkers, N.Y.) hit a two-run homer to right field to give the Chargers a 4-2 lead.
The Bears added two runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game after RBIs by Tyree Bradley and Justin Rivera.
The Bears took the lead in the fourth inning after a Bradley two-RBI double. The Bears extended the lead over Dominican with eight runs between the fifth and sixth innings.
The Chargers added one run in the fifth inning on an RBI-single by Gilligan for his third RBI of the game. Dominican plated a run in the ninth inning when Benjamin Avila (Walden, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line.
The Bears were led by Tyree Bradley who went 3-5 and drove in four RBIs. Luis Ramirez added two hits and three RBIs.
Gilligan finished 3-5 with three RBIs for the Chargers while Avila also added three hits.
Game Two: The Bears completed the sweep over Dominican with a 4-2 win in game two.
Anthony Leak (Pelham, N.Y.) started on the mound for Dominican in game two and pitched a strong game by earning nine strikeouts over five innings.
Edwin Melendez recorded the win for the Bears with five innings pitched and allowed one earned run.
Justin Sanchez put the Bears in front in the first inning with an RBI-single. Luis Ramirez, who finished the game 3-4, led off the third inning with a solo homer down the left field line to extend the BC lead to 2-0.
Elian Guzman added to the lead with an RBI-single later in the third inning.
The Chargers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning after Sosa-Rivas led off the inning with a double. Jean Nunez (New York, N.Y.) knocked in the first run of the game for the Chargers.
Peter Kiefer (Waterford, Conn.) cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI-single.
The Bears added a run in the top of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 4-2. Suriel Sleiter closed the game out for the Bears and recorded his third save of the season.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow when they travel to Adelphi University for a non-conference game at 3:30 PM.
