Albany, N.Y. (4/25/24) The Dominican University New York baseball team suffered a 14-13 setback to host, the College of Saint Rose, in a non-conference game played at Bob Bellizzi Field.
The Chargers fall to 15-29 on the season, while the Golden Knights improve to 18-17.
Dominican put two runs on the board in the top of the first on back-to-back RBI groundouts for the early advantage, but the Golden Knights scored two runs in their first at-bat for a 2-2 score.
The Chargers added a run in the second as left fielder Joseph Ragone (Queens, N.Y.) led off the inning with a solo home run to regain a 3-2 edge. St. Rose countered with four runs in the third stanza to claim a 6-3 lead, but a two-run top of the fourth cut the lead to 6-5 as third basemen Joseph Coppola (Cornwall, N.Y.) hit a two-run single to left field.
St. Rose tacked on three more runs in the fourth to rebuild a 9-5 lead, but a five-run top of the fifth put Dominican ahead 10-6. Andrew Smith (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) doubled home a run and later scored on a passed ball for the first two runs of the frame and later Coppola blasted a three-run homer to re-take the lead.
The Golden Knights answered right back in the bottom of the fifth with a run and added runs in the sixth and seventh innings for a 14-10 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Smith singled home a run and first basemen Alexander Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) delivered a two-run home run for the eventhal 14-13 score.
Smith and Coppola had three hits each in the loss, while Coppola had a career high five RBIs.
Reliever Zowen Collins (Cobleskill, N.Y.) suffered the loss.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent, Caldwell University in a north division doubleheader.
