CHARGERS DEFEAT GOLDEN FALCONS FOR FIRST CONFERENCE WIN OF THE SEASON
Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/27/24) The Dominican University New York men's lacrosse team earned their first conference victory of the season this afternoon after defeating the Felician University Golden Falcons 13-7 on O'Brien Field.
The Chargers improve to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Golden Falcons fall to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Freshman goalkeeper Bryce Layton (Glenville, N.Y.) made 11 saves to earn his third win of the season in net for the Chargers. Felician keeper Nick Grebe made a game-high 16 saves but suffered the loss.
Each team scored twice in the opening quarter but the Chargers jumped ahead with four unanswered goals to begin the second quarter for the 6-2 lead.
Down the stretch of the first half, Felician added two goals and DU's Michael Aufiero (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored with 24 seconds remaining. The Golden Falcons answered with nine seconds remaining to cut the DU lead to 7-4 by halftime.
Dominican outscored Felician 3-1 in the third quarter and used another four goal run to extend their lead to 13-5 midway through the fourth quarter.
Felician added two goals late in the fourth quarter but the Chargers secured the 13-7 victory.
Kyle Benedetto (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Zachary Souza (Stratford, Conn.) each recorded a hat trick in the win. Benedetto also recorded a team-high three assists.
Josh Wesneski (Forty Fort, Pa.) finished with two goals and one assist while Chad Keyser (Kingston, N.Y.), Brenden O'Connor (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), and Aufiero each added one goal. James Conklin (Warwick, N.Y.) and Sean Cosgrove (Warwick, N.Y.) each scored one goal and recorded one assist. Cosgrove also picked up five ground balls.
DU faceoff man Patrick Roderka (Warwick, N.Y.) won nine faceoffs and also picked up five ground balls. Joseph DeGregorio (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had a team-high four caused turnovers and also picked up five ground balls.
The Chargers return to action next Tuesday when they visit Caldwell University for a CACC match up with theCougars at 4:00 PM.
