SPARTANS TOP CHARGERS IN ECC ACTION
Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/28/24) The Dominican University New York men's volleyball team fell in conference action to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College this afternoon by a score of 3-0 on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.
The Chargers and the Spartans split the season series 1-1 as DU falls to 10-11 overall on the season and 2-2 in the ECC. STAC improves to 8-12 overall and 4-1 in conference play which puts them in sole possession of first place in the ECC standings.
The Spartans jumped out in front to a 1-0 match lead after a 25-18 victory in the opening set. STAC built a five point lead early in the second set but DU fought their way back to cut the deficit to one. STAC used a 10-4 run to finish the second set for the 2-0 lead.
STAC outlasted the Chargers in the third set outscoring DU 11-7 on their way to the 3-0 sweep.
Phinehas Wiley (Cedarburg, Wisc) and Jacob Davidson (Bloomington, Ind.) each recorded six kills for the Chargers. Davidson also added six points and four digs while Wiley added seven points and five digs.
Luke Koster (Geneva, Ill.) finished with a team-high 15 assists while Tyler Roukey (Hudson, Ohio) added a team-high 12 digs.
The Spartans were led by Kyran Versteegen, Gabriel Viera, and Andre Cippiciani who combined for 30 kills and 34.5 points. Joaquin La Jara recorded a match high 29 assists while Fernando Juarez recorded a team leading 13 digs.
The Chargers return to action next Friday, April 5th when they host ECC opponent American International College at 5:00 PM.
