LADY CHARGERS FALL IN CACC OPENER TO PURPLE KNIGHTS
Orangeburg, N.Y. (11/29/23) The Dominican University New York women's basketball team dropped their CACC opener to the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport.
Dominican made a strong push in the fourth quarter but their comeback effort fell short and the Lady Chargers fell to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the CACC. UB improves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play after the win.
Cayla Howard (Naugatuck, Conn.) matched her career high in points with 22 including a team-high eight rebounds. Alexis Suarez (Poughquag, N.Y.) finished with 12 points and a team-high seven assists.
Isabella Javier (Bergenfield, N.J.) provided 13 points off the bench including going 3-6 from three-point range and recorded six boards.
Chidinma Ndukauba (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored nine points and went 4-4 from the field.
The Lady Chargers got off to a strong start and held an 18-13 lead after the first quarter. UB used a strong 23-point effort in the second quarter and finished the quarter on a 20-5 run.
The Purple Knights extended to their largest lead of the game in the third quarter which was 16 points.
The Lady Chargers came fighting back in the fourth quarter by outscoring UB 24-14. Howard led the fourth quarter comeback with 12 points. Dominican trailed by 10 points with 2:48 left to play and used a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 64-61 with 35 seconds remaining.
The Purple Knights would hold the lead down the stretch and secure the victory.
Bridgeport was led by Shakira Hester who recorded a double-double with 18 points and a team-high 15 boards. Sade Young scored 12 points while Samirah Akinwunmi scored 11 points. Stephanie McBride added 10 points and pulled down eight boards.
The Lady Chargers return to action this Saturday when they travel to Post University for a CACC north division matchup with the Eagles at 1:00 PM.
