LADY CHARGERS EDGED BY BEARS
Bloomfield, N.J. (2/20/24) The Dominican University New York women's basketball team was edged by the Bears of Bloomfield College of MSU by a score of 75-73.
The Bears completed the 15 point comeback to earn a split in the season series with the Lady Chargers.
Dominican falls to 11-14 overall and 7-7 in conference play after the loss while BC improves to 6-18 overall and 4-10 in the CACC.
Dominican came out strong putting up 24 points in the first quarter and held a 15 point lead towards the end of the opening quarter which was their largest of the game.
The Bears answered in the second quarter by outscoring the Lady Chargers 20-11 and cut the deficit to one point by halftime.
A high scoring third quarter for both teams saw the Lady Chargers score 26 points but the Bears countered with 24 points. Cayla Howard (Naugatuck, Conn.) was the high scorer in the third quarter with 13 points and Dominican held a three point lead by the start of the fourth quarter.
Dominican held a four point lead but the Bears went on an 8-2 run to take the lead with four minutes to play.
Down the stretch of the fourth quarter BC's Tiara Mahorn converted on a three point play with ten seconds remaining. Dominican cashed in on free-throws in the final ten seconds but were not able to tie the game and BC solidified the 75-73 win.
Howard led the way with a game high 27 points and recorded five boards. Chidinma Ndukauba (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Alexis Suarez (Poughquag, N.Y.) each scored 13 points. Suarez added five assists while Ndukauba also added five assists and 11 boards for her seventh double-double of the season.
Tamia Nunes (Worcester, Mass.) provided nine points off the bench and Tanasha Mills (New City, N.Y.) recorded five assists and scored five points.
The Bears were led by Tiara Mahorn who scored 23 points. Daniya Darby and Taneshia Tucker each scored 19 points. Darby recorded 12 boards for a double double and Tucker also recorded seven assists. Kamrin Babbs scored 11 points, six boards, and two assists.
The Lady Chargers return home this Saturday to host the Cougars of Caldwell University for their home finale and Senior Day at 1:00 PM.
