BASEBALL SPLITS WITH UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES
Orangeburg, NY (4/21/12) The Dominican College baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header with the visiting Devils of the University of the Sciences this evening at Veteran's Memorial Park. DC took game one, 11-10, while the Devils shut out the Chargers, 3-0.
Orangeburg, NY (4/21/12) The Dominican College baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header with the visiting Devils of the University of the Sciences this evening at Veteran's Memorial Park. DC took game one, 11-10, while the Devils shut out the Chargers, 3-0.
Game One: The Chargers took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as left fielder Tony Blaker (Windsor, CT) hit his fifth home run of the year, this one being a three-run shot over the right field fence. Centerfielder Xavier Bonilla (Bronx, NY) later followed with a solo shot over the right field fence.
The Devils had a three run third inning, but DC added a run in bottom half of the third inning to hold a 5-3 lead. Andrew Camardella (Pelham, NY) hit an RBI double down the left field line. Dominican tacked on six more runs in the sixth inning as freshman Robert Alonso (Kingston, NY) hit an RBI triple to right center field and Oliver Christensen (Coral Springs, FL) followed with an RBI single down the right field line. Later with two outs, Bonilla blasted his second home run of the game, this one a three-run shot over the right field fence to give the Chargers an 11-3 lead.
University of the Sciences added two runs in the fifth, a run in the sixth and put four on the board in the ninth inning for the eventual 11-10 final score.
Blake finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Bonilla had four RBIs in the win.
Starter Justin Moore* (Wantagh, NY) improved to 3-0 on the year in six innings of work, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits .
Caleb Whiteley (San Antonio, TX) went 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and six hits. Freshman Matthew Festa (Staten Island, NY) got his second save of the year in 1/3 innings of work.
Game Two: The Devils took a 1-0 lead in the third inning and added a run in the sixth and seventh to take a 3-0 lead and eventual victory.
University of the Sciences limited the Chargers to just three hits.
Starter Dustin Javins (Fort Lauderdale, FL) took the loss (2-3) in six innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and eight strikeouts.
With the split, Dominican now stands at 19-23 overall and 11-7 in the CACC.
DC is back in action on Wednesday when they host Queens College.
