DOMINICAN WINS ON DAY ONE OF CACC TOURNAMENT
New Castle, Del. (5/8/14) The Dominican College baseball team won their opening game of the double-elimination portion of the 2014 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament held today at Wilson Field. The fifth-seeded Chargers upset the top-seeded Wildcats of Wilmington University, 5-4 to move into the winner's bracket of the tournament.

(5/8/14) The Dominican College baseball team won their opening game of the double-elimination portion of the 2014 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament held today at Wilson Field. The fifth-seeded Chargers upset the top-seeded Wildcats of Wilmington University, 5-4 to move into the winner's bracket of the tournament.
The Wildcats scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning and led 2-0 after three innings of play. Dominican (22-22 overall) got on the board with three runs in the fourth stanza to take a 3-2 lead. Shortstop Robert Alonso (Hurley, N.Y.) hit a triple to center field to score a run and senior catcher Tyler Clark (Cheshire, Conn.) followed with an RBI single to left field to tie the game, 2-2. Luis Paniagua (Manhattan, N.Y.) later followed with a single to center field which allowed Clark to move to third and he came home to score on a 'Cat fielding error on the play to give them the lead.
WU tied the score in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Chargers regained the lead in the seventh inning with two more runs. A one out single through the left side off the bat of Jonathan Martinez (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) brought home a run and Alonso followed with an RBI ground out to shortstop for the 5-3 lead. Wilmington got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but the Chargers were able to hang on to the 5-4 victory.
Alonso collected two hits in the game and two RBIs.
Charger starter Ryan Calby (Huntington Station, N.Y.) picked up his seventh win of the season (7-2) in eight innings of work, allowing four runs on 10 hits and five strikeouts.
Peter Martinez (White Plains, N.Y.) got his first save of the season as he came in to pitch the ninth inning.
Dominican will take on the second-seeded Golden Falcons of Felician College tomorrow at 11am on Wilson Field.
