PAULINO AND GARBUIO LEAD #3 CHARGERS TO CACC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Caldwell, N.J. (5/13/21) Dominican College baseball players Richard Paulino (San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic) and Bobby Garbuio (Chappaqua, N.Y.) got back-to-back hits to score four runs and lift the third-seeded Dominican College baseball team over the second-seeded Cougars of Caldwell University, 15-13, this afternoon in a 2021 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Championship Semi-Final game played at Kiwanis Oval.
Caldwell, N.J. (5/13/21) Dominican College baseball players Richard Paulino (San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic) and Bobby Garbuio (Chappaqua, N.Y.) got back-to-back hits to score four runs and lift the third-seeded Dominican College baseball team over the second-seeded Cougars of Caldwell University, 15-13, this afternoon in a 2021 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Championship Semi-Final game played at Kiwanis Oval.
Dominican improves to 18-13 with the win and advances to the CACC Championship Game against the second-seed from the South Division, Thomas Jefferson University, to be played this coming Saturday and hosted by TJU.
The Charger offense scored 15 runs on 13 hits, while the Cougars tallied 13 runs on 18 hits.
In the top of the tenth frame with runners on first and second with one out, Paulino singled up-the-middle to plate Carmine Giordano (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and break an 11-11 tie. Up next was Garbuio who delivered a three-run blast over the centerfield fence to increase the lead to 15-11.
The bottom of the tenth saw the Cougars score two run on two hits and an error the final 15-13 win.
Dominican opened the game with a three-run first inning as right fielder Shane Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) drew a bases loaded walk to earn the RBI and first basemen Arthur Quinones (Miami, Fla.) followed with a two-run single to right for the early 3-0 lead.
CU got one of the runs back in their first at-bat of the contest, but DC responded with a five-run top of the second to increase the lead to 8-1. One run scored on an error and later Paulino produced a two out RBI single. Hewlette had the big hit of the inning with a three-run homer to left field.
Caldwell added two more runs in the bottom of the second, while once again Dominican answered in their next at-bat with two runs on the RBI ground out from Brian Sanders (La Ceiba, Honduras) and the double to left center to make the score 10-4.
The Cougars made the score 10-7 with three runs in the fifth and the Chargers countered in the sixth with the lead-off home run over the center field fence off the bat of CACC Player of the Year, Joshua Colon (Bronx, N.Y.).
In the bottom of the sixth, Caldwell scored four runs on four hits to tie the game at 11-11. The game would remain tied until the top of the 10th innng.
Hewlette went 2-3 with four RBI in the game, while Garbuio added three RBI.
Reliever William Espinal (Bronx, N.Y.) picked up the win in three innings of relief (3-4), allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and three strikeouts.
Eric Sandusky (Stony Point, N.Y.) collected five strikeouts in four and one third innings of work.
