Pomona, N.Y. (4/7/24) The Dominican University New York baseball team split a conference doubleheader this afternoon with the Tigers of Holy Family University at Clover Stadium.
The Chargers took game one by a score of 7-3 but fell in game two 7-5 to bring their overall record to 11-21 and CACC record to 6-6. The Tigers now hold a record of 14-17 overall and 6-6 in the CACC.
Game One: The Chargers pounded 14 total hits in the opening game and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The Tigers cut the deficit to 3-2 after an RBI-singles by Dalton Turner in the second inning and Alex Camilo in the fourth inning.
Robert Liriano (Haverstraw, N.Y.) entered the game in relief with the bases loaded in the fifth inning with two outs and recorded a big strikeout to keep the score at 3-2.
The Chargers scratched a run across in the fourth inning. Ryan Bongiorno (Stanhope, N.J.) doubled in a run in the sixth run of the game and later scored on an RBI-single by Tyler Richman (Sunrise, Fla.) for the 7-3 lead.
Liriano closed the door on a 2.1 inning save for his first of the season. Isaiah Figueroa (Old Bridge, N.J.) earned his third win of the season after tossing 4.2 innings and recorded seven strikeouts.
David Knepper (Miami, Fla.) and Tyler Richman combined for seven hits. Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, N.J.) went 2-4 including a double, run scored, and one RBI. Bongiorno finished the game 2-3.
Game Two: The Tigers bounced back in game two and earned a come from behind victory to secure the split.
The Chargers jumped in front in the first inning with an RBI-single by Gilligan and extended their lead to 2-0 in the second on a sac fly by Joseph Coppola (Cornwall, N.Y.).
DU scratched another run across in the fourth inning for the 3-0 lead.
The Tigers cut the DU lead to 3-2 after an RBI-double by Garrison Pregulman and Nick Lombardo followed with a sac fly.
The Tigers rallied again in the sixth inning and after tying the game at 3-3, Pregulman delivered a go ahead two-run double for the 5-3 lead.
Zach Morales added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend the HFU lead to 7-3.
Davin Keddell-Tuckey (Troy, N.Y.) cracked a two run homer in the top of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 7-5 but the Chargers fell short.
Nathan Kuhta recorded his first win of the season in relief for the Tigers. AJ Mitchell (Yonkers, N.Y.) started on the mound in game two for the Chargers and tossed four innings and recorded five strikeouts.
The Chargers return to action Tuesday night when they host Felician University for a CACC north division match up at 7:00 PM at Clover Stadium.
