HIGH SCORING AFFAIR SEES BEARS DEFEAT CHARGERS
Orangeburg, N.Y. (1/3/24) The Dominican University New York men's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division contest to the visiting Bears of Bloomfield College of Montclair State University, 103-96, this evening in a game played on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.
Bloomfield improves to 8-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while Dominican falls to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the CACC.
The 16th Annual James Clancy Memorial Game featured 17 ties, 15 lead changes and both benches combining for 115 points in the game. There were 33 turnovers (16 for the Chargers and 17 for the Bears) and 48 trips to the charity stripe (29 for Bloomfield and 19 for Dominican) throughout the 40 minutes.
Guard Javel Cherry (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led Dominican with 20 points and five caroms in the loss.
Joshua Serrano (Amityville, N.Y.) tallied 19 points (8-12 from the floor and 3-5 from the charity stripe), five assists and four rebounds.
CACC Defensive Player of the Week, Seth Sharif-Brown (Hackensack, N.J.) contributed 17 points and nine rebounds, while Joseph Merrill (Derry, N.H.) added 12 points, three rebounds and two steals. Jaden Honis (Bridgewater, N.J.) scored eight points.
Starrell Hearns led Bloomfield and all scorers with 27 points.
Dominican opened the contest with back-to-back baskets and held a 9-2 lead with 18:02 left in the first half. A Key'Sean Maynard (Queens, N.Y.) jumper made the score 42-37 with 2:57 to go before the break but a 7-2 run by the Bears gave them a 44-43 advantage at the half.
A Charger trey from Serrano with 3:51 left in regulation lifted them ahead 87-84, but a six-point swing by Bloomfield gave them the 90-87 edge and they maintained the lead the rest of the way to bring home the win.
Up next for Dominican is a road trip to Thomas Jefferson University for a CACC contest on January 6th.
